Florida’s First Children Zone Becomes State Children’s
Initiative
|
WHAT: |
The City of
Orlando’s Parramore Kidz Zone will be designated
a Florida Children’s Initiative on behalf of the
State of Florida by the Ounce of Prevention Fund
of Florida. The state legislature mandated this
designation in June 2008 to create statutory
flexibility to allow Florida’s communities to
identify at-risk neighborhoods, and then
empowers those neighborhoods to address concerns
related to the well being of their children. In
2006, Parramore Kidz Zone was the first children
zone to form in Florida, three years prior to
the State legislation designating Children’s
Initiatives, and is the only project in the
nation that the Harlem Children Zone allows to
use its trademarked “zone” term.
Modeled
after the Harlem Children’s Zone, Parramore Kidz
Zone employs creative outreach to engage a
critical mass of Parramore’s children and
linking them to positive opportunities,
including pre-kindergarten education, parenting
education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and
constructive activities when school is out.
